Mary K. Newton papers, 1928-1963.

Papers documenting Newton's involvement in the parent-teacher association movement in S.C. during the 1930s, her work on behalf of the Julian Mitchell Public School parent-teacher association, her membership with the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, and her service on the board of managers of the South Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers. Materials represented include drafts of Mrs. Newton's reports as president of the First District, 1937-1939, representing the Counties of Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, and Georgetown; and specimen copies of a newsletter, "Chips From the Oak's Trunk," edited by Mrs. Newton as publicity chairman for the state organization. Also including information re the Whitmire (S.C.) Parent-Teacher Association's 1936 Founders Day celebration honoring the memory of Phoebe Apperson Hearst, co-founder of the National Congress of Mothers, which later became the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. Scrapbook, 1928-1932, contains newspaper clippings, notes on the organization at national, state, and local levels, and promotional literature released by the National Congress of Parents and Teachers.

Phoebe Elizabeth Apperson Hearst was born in St. Clair, Missouri, the daughter of Drucilla (Whitmire) and Randolph Walker Apperson. The National Congress of Parents and Teachers (now the PTA) was organized by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst in December 1896. The first national meeting of the National Congress of Mothers (as it was first called) was held in Washington D.C. in February, 1897.
